Corset and your misconceptions

The lace tightening episode in Titanic or Keira Knightley fainting in The Pirates of The Caribbean does not give a favorable picture of a corset. However, either for fashion fetishists and regular lingerie shoppers, a wardrobe is usually incomplete without it. Corsets usually cover the upper body extending from below the arms to the hips. It also comes in the form of a 'waist cincher', which is a shorter variety and covers only the waist area that is below the ribs to above the hips. Further, corsets may also come with garters to support stockings.

A chemise now has an independent apparel value but in the past, it used to be worn under corsets only. Chemises can also be worn as nightwear or even underwear.
